Choosing a label printer with the right printer resolution

Choosing a label printer with the right printer resolution

Label resolution

Dilcom Bulgaria Ltd. is an authorized representative of many global companies manufacturing label printers. As such, we offer a wide range barcode label printers, suitable for many different industries and applications. In this blog article we will discuss the different factors that can have an impact on your choice of label printer. We will also help you choose a barcode printer with a suitable resolution for printing labels.

Today, most label printers on the market offer 200, 300 and 600 dots per inch (dpi) resolution. Choosing the right print resolution depends on the application of the labels, the required quality of the printed image and the necessary print speed.

If you require higher image resolution (number of pixels) and a more detailed imprint, then you should choose a barcode printer with higher resolution and excellent print quality.

For example, printers with a lower 200 dpi resolution fully meet the requirements for printing logistics labels. This is owing to the fact that typically this type of labels contain text in larger fonts and bigger 1D or 2D barcodes. The quality and clarity of a 200 dpi imprint is sufficient to ensure that a product can be traced through the entire supply chain - from production of the logistic unit through to when it reaches the end customer.

If you need to print labels containing text with a print size of 7-8 pt or 2D barcodes not smaller than 8 x 8 mm, printers with 300 dpi resolution are perfectly suitable. With the right combination of materials and printer settings, you can achieve really good results with a 300 dpi printer. The text and barcode will be very legible.

The things you need to consider to achieve this result are the correct matching of the label material and thermal transfer ribbon (if you are using a thermal transfer printer, no need for an ink cartridge), as well as the appropriate thermal head temperature setting and print speed. Thermal transfer and thermal direct printers with a resolution of 300 dpi have been increasingly in demand in recent years. They are becoming more popular due to their good price performance ratio.

Printers with a resolution of 600 dpi are also increasingly expanding their market share. Most often, these high resolution printers are used by manufacturers of electronics, electronic cards and components. They are used in these sectors because here it is necessary to print labels smaller than 10 x 10 mm. These tiny labels contain text smaller than 5-6 pt and 2D barcodes smaller than 7 x 7 mm.

These printers with a resolution of 600 dpi are also used in the textile industry for printing textile labels and size labels made of satin and taffeta. They are also suitable for advertising agencies, as they meet almost all the requirements of their clients in terms of quality of thermal transfer printing.

When choosing a printer, you should also consider the relationship between the print speed and the print resolution. The higher the resolution is, the lower the maximum speed at which the printer can print is. This means that if you need high printer productivity, you will have to compromise on the high resolution.

Dilcom also offers inkjet printers and color laser printers for label printing. To ensure the high quality of full color labels, a color laser printer or inkjet printer must have a very high resolution from 1200 dpi to 4800 dpi.
