The wine industry is facing a new challenge - the European Parliament and the EU Council have announced new regulatory requirements for wine labels.
From 8 December 2023, the 2021/2117 regulation obliges producers to declare the energy value, allergens and the full list of ingredients of the wine on its label.
If they wish, they are allowed to include only the nutritional value and allergens on the label, and give online access to the full ingredient information via a QR code or URL (printed on the label) leading to a page with all the data. It is also important to note that this page cannot have any commercial or marketing content. The inclusion of promotional information together with the Regulation's mandatory information on the ingredients and nutritional values of the wine is a breach of the law.
The law also requires the nutritional value to be presented using the symbol 'E' and the value per 100 ml. As regards to the language used to convey the information, the regulation states that the data must be written in an official EU language and be easily understood by consumers. Different EU Member States are free to determine the languages in which the information must be displayed online.
Wine products that do not meet the new requirements will be withdrawn from the market. Under the law, these wines could also face administrative penalties.
Wine that is "produced and labelled" before 8 December 2023 is exempt from the new requirements and can continue to be sold in the EU after that date until stock runs out.
